Smt. Om Prabha Jain

(6.2.1931 - 8.8.1978)

Smt. Om Prabha Jain, Ex-Finance Minister of Haryana was a well-known political leader.  She was born in a respectable Agarwal family at Varanasi on February 6, 1931.

She was married to Dr. K. C. Jain in 1951, who was a well-known social figure.

During 1957-72 she was elected M.L.A.  consecutively for four times, in pre-organised Punjab and then in Haryana from Kaithal constituency.  She was Dy. Minister during 1962-63 and Minister during 1965-66 in Punjab.  She was Minister in Haryana during 1966-67 and again during 1968-72 with rank 2 in the State Cabined.  As Minister of Finance and other important Departments her contribution towards development of newly formed State of Haryana was of high administrative order and merit.  She was Chairman and adviser of various State Committees.
Political Work: Convenor - Women Section Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (1960-62): Treasurer and later Secretary, Punjab Legislature Party (1962-64):  Member, All India Congress and Haryana Pr. Congress Committee (1968-72): Chairman, Finance and Entertainment Committee of All India Congress Session, Faridabad (1969).

She was Director of State Bank of Patiala and of A I. Khadi and Village Industry Board, office bearer and active member of Indo-Soviet Cultural Society and S.O.S. Children Village, Green Fields, Faridabad.

She was founder/Chief Parton and President of Indira Gandhi Mahila Mahavidyalaya, Kaithal, Founder Chief Parton and Organiser of Senior Model School and Modern School and Ba-Bapu Chhatrawas, Kaithal.  She was President of Ahimsa International since 26th January, 1973 till her faitful death in car accident on August 8, 1978.

An active field worker with a long spotless public career, Smt. Om Prabha Jain was committed to Congress Party’s ideology.  She was a fluent speaker and writer both in English and Hindi on social, political and economic matters.  Art, Literature and music were the hobbies of dynamic soft spoken and amiable late Smt. Om Prabha Jain.
