Vice-Admiral Sukhmal Jain
Vice-Admiral Sukhmal Jain is an illustrious son not only of his father Shri Santlal Jain but of the entire Jain community to be proud of. Throughout his career, he has been a Naval Officer of out-standing merit, capability and performance.
Vice-Admiral Jain was selected for training in Merchant Navy Training Ship - in 1948 when he was still at school in the final year of Higher Secondary. On successful completion of his training in Dufferin, he was selected for the Indian Navy. In his Naval career he has served in many ships of the Indian Navy and its shore establishments. He has commanded two Frigates of the Indian Navy and another ship of the Nigerian Navy while on deputation to that country. He has held important assignments ashore such as Director of Submarine Arm, Director of Naval Plans and holds distinction of having been Naval Chiefs. He is a Graduate from the Defense Service Staff College, Wellington and has attended Naval Command Course at Naval War College Rhode Island in USA.
Vice-Admiral Jain was elevated to Flag Rank on October 1, 1980 when he assumed the duties of Assistant Chief of Naval Staff at the Naval Headquarters. In July 1981, he assumed command of the Eastern Fleet of the Indian Navy based at Visakhapatnam. In June 1984 he was promoted to the rank of Vice-Admiral and was Director General, Western Coast Guard. On February 28, 1986 he has taken over as Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Western Naval Command at Bombay.
During the 1971 conflict with Pakistan, Vice-Admiral Jain was commanding INS Kadmatt which took part in operations against Karachi and for which action he won a gallantry award of 'Nausena Medal'. For his distinguished service of an exceptional order he was awarded "Ati Vishist Seva Medal" in 1978. He had his Naval training in England during 1951-52 and during the period 1951-81 he has been on Flag Showing and Operational duties to West Indies, Malta, Giberalter, Italy, Greece, Lebanon Egypt, Singapore, Thailand, Malaya, China, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Male, Ceylon, Seychelles, Indonesia, Senegal, Sierra Leone , Ghana and to various Persian Gulf countries. He was on temporary placement to the Nigerian Navy during 1962-64 for advising Nigerian Navy and in Muscat during 1972. He has attended various courses in England between 1952 to 1954 and Naval Command Course in USA during 1973-74. He has been to Nigeria, USSR, USA, Muscat, Thailand, Iraq, Seychelles and Singapore on Government deputations to discuss Naval matters.
Vice-Admiral Jain was born at Simla in Himachal Pradesh on September 1, 1933.Married to Smt. Krishna on May 9, 1958, he has two daughters - Chandrima Jain and Indrima jain. Vice-Admiral Jain is a keen sportsman who excels in several games. He has represented the Indian Navy in yachting, tennis, golf and badminton. In badminton he has won several State Championships.
