Raja Shivprasad "Sitarehind"

Member of the Legislative Council of the Viceroy & Educationalist

 

Illustrious Raja Shivprasad was the grandson of Seth Dalchand and son of Seth Uttamchand, decendents of famous Jagat Seths of Murshidabad. Seths of Murshidabad. Seth Dalchand had settled at Banaras.

Raja Shicprasad was highly educated, intelligent and multilinguist. Raja Ishwari Narain Singh, the ruler of Banaras, Nawab Wahid Ali Shah of Oudh and several other rulers had great regard for his learning and intelligence. He was a member of the Legislative Council of the Viceroy and honoured with the title of Raja and C. I. E. (Sitarehind) in 1874. On establishment of Government Educational Department in the then Uttar Pradesh he was appointed the first Inspector of School for the whole province. He had helped the English Officers in the compilation of early provincial gazetteers. The famous Archeological Surveyor General Lord Cunnungham treated him as a kind friend. He wrote ltihas Timir Nashak and several other books.

A patron of Hindi language, he championed the cause of introduction of Hindi in the courts, proper education of Hindi in schools and publication of useful Hindi books for the students. Even Bhartendu Harishchandra had high regards for him and treated him as his Guru.
