Shri Kamlesh D. Patel, affectionately known as Daaji, is
an Indian spiritual teacher, author and the Global Guide of the Heartfulness
Movement. He is also the President of the Shri Ram Chandra Mission (SRCM) and
is the fourth spiritual guide in the century-old Heartfulness tradition.
Heartfulness sources describe the movement as having millions of practitioners
and thousands of trainers across more than 160 countries.
Early Life and Education
Daaji was born in Gujarat, India, in 1956. He developed
an interest in spirituality and meditation at an early age. In 1976, while
studying pharmacy in Ahmedabad, he began practising the system of meditation
that later became widely known as Heartfulness. During this period, he met Shri
Ram Chandra of Shahjahanpur, popularly known as Babuji Maharaj, the second
guide in the Heartfulness lineage.
After completing his studies in pharmacy, Daaji moved to
the United States, where he established a successful pharmacy business in New
York and raised his family. Alongside his professional responsibilities, he
remained deeply committed to meditation and spiritual practice. After Babuji's
passing in 1983, he continued his spiritual journey under Shri Parthasarathi
Rajagopalachari (Chariji).
In 2011, Chariji selected Daaji as his spiritual
successor. Following Chariji's passing in December 2014, Daaji assumed his role
as the fourth Guide of the Heartfulness tradition.
Heartfulness and Spiritual
Philosophy
Daaji's teachings seek to combine the wisdom of ancient
spiritual traditions with a practical and scientific approach to meditation and
consciousness. A distinctive element of Heartfulness practice is Yogic
Transmission, or Pranahuti, which is presented as an aid to meditation and
inner spiritual development.
His approach emphasises meditation, inner transformation,
simplicity, compassion, self-discipline and the progressive refinement of human
consciousness. He has also encouraged research into the physiological and other
measurable effects of meditation and Yogic Transmission.
Daaji and Jain Philosophy
An important dimension of Daaji's recent spiritual
scholarship is his engagement with Jain philosophy and the teachings of the
Tirthankaras. He presents principles such as Ahimsa (non-violence), Aparigraha
(non-possessiveness) and Dhyana (meditation) not merely as philosophical ideals
but as practical disciplines capable of transforming human consciousness.
His work also explores Bhagwan Rishabh Dev (Adinath), the
first Jain Tirthankara, in the wider context of meditation, yoga and spiritual
evolution. Through this approach, Daaji seeks to build a bridge between Jain
spiritual wisdom and experiential meditative practices.
Author and Thinker
Daaji is a prolific author and speaker on meditation,
consciousness, spirituality, human relationships and personal transformation.
His better-known books include:
His writings generally combine traditional spiritual
concepts with observations drawn from contemporary life, psychology and
scientific enquiry.
He has also written specifically on Jain spiritual
thought, including works dealing with Jainism and the holy Tirthankaras,
through which he interprets Jain teachings from the perspective of meditation
and inner transformation.
Education, Youth and Environment
Daaji has placed particular emphasis on bringing
meditation, values and self-development practices to young people and
educational institutions. Heartfulness states that its value-based
self-development programmes have reached students and faculty across thousands
of schools, colleges and universities.
He is also closely associated with Kanha Shanti Vanam,
the international headquarters of Heartfulness near Hyderabad. Under his
leadership, environmental restoration and afforestation have become significant
aspects of the organisation's work, alongside meditation, yoga, education and
wellness programmes.
Padma Bhushan
In 2023, the Government of India conferred upon Shri
Kamlesh D. Patel the Padma Bhushan, India's third-highest civilian honour, for
distinguished service in the field of Spiritualism. The award is officially
recorded in the Government of India's Padma Awards notification.
International Peace and
Interfaith Work
Daaji's work extends beyond meditation to the promotion
of peace, compassion, interfaith understanding and human unity. Heartfulness
identifies him as having been named the Commonwealth's Global Ambassador for
Peacebuilding and Faith in March 2024.
His association with Commonwealth initiatives has
included programmes involving young people, peacebuilding, values and
compassionate action. The Commonwealth has also collaborated with Heartfulness
on youth-focused initiatives and events.
Significance
Daaji represents a distinctive combination of spiritual
teacher, scientific-minded seeker, author, environmental advocate and promoter
of peace. Having begun his professional life in pharmacy and business, he
eventually devoted himself to making meditation and spiritual practices
accessible to people across cultures and nationalities.
His engagement with Jain philosophy is particularly
noteworthy, because he interprets the timeless principles of Ahimsa, Aparigraha
and Dhyana as living disciplines for the modern world. By connecting the
teachings of Bhagwan Rishabh Dev and the Jain Tirthankaras with meditation,
consciousness and inner transformation, his work seeks to bring ancient Jain
wisdom into dialogue with contemporary spiritual practice.
Today, Padma Bhushan Shri Kamlesh D. Patel (Daaji) is
recognised internationally as the Global Guide of Heartfulness and as an
influential voice advocating meditation, spiritual development, environmental
responsibility, peace and the unity of humanity.
