MRS. SONIA GANDHI RECEIVES BLESSINGS FROM ACHARYA MAHAPRAGYA JI AT THE PREKSHA VISHWA BHARTI SANSTHAN IN AHMEDABAD
Ahemdabad, Aug. 25. Calling upon the people of Gujarat to "throw out'' the "irresponsible'' Modi Government, she described the Vajpayee Government as a "Government of scams and scandals'' — it was "looting'' the country — and asked the people in general, and the Congressmen in particular, to raise their voice against the BJP's "misrule.'' Ms. Gandhi alleged, even the foreign aid meant for the quake victims had been "misused" and the special funds earmarked by the Centre for natural calamities were never allocated to the quake victims. During the visit, she also visited the Jain Acharya Shri Mahapragya in Gandhinagar, for his blessings. She said that Acharya Shri was engaged in a great task of social integration, which was an example in itself. Acharya Shri expressed his happiness at that Smt. Acharya Anand Rishiji Maharaj was one such soul, whose contributions in the social and educational spheres have been a prolific and significant as his spiritual guidance to his followers. He was born at Ahmednagar (Maharashtra) in August 1900 and received initiation from Ratan Rishiji Maharaj at the age of 13, thereby formally committing himself to a life of spiritual pursuits and service to humanity. He Mastered the Jain Scriptures as well as ancient philosophical texts of Sanskrit language. His teachings were deep rooted in love, non-violence and tolerance. He was proficient in nine languages and wrote extensively in Marathi and Hindi. The Paryushana Parva - ARTICLE By Mr. Yashwant K. Malaiya
The origin of Paryushana is related to the staying of the monks in one place for the rainy season. "Paryushana" is staying of the monks in one place. In popular terminology this stay is termed "chaturmaasa" because the rainy season is regarded to be about four months. However the minumum duration of Paryushana is regarded to be 70 days. For this minimum duration, Paryushana must be initiated by panchami (fifth day) of the shukla phase of the Bhadrapada month. EXTENSION OF AHIMSA YEAR UPTO 2003 IN MADHYA PRADESH
Government of Madhya Pradesh has extended the period of AHIMSA YEAR upto April 2003. Previously, to commemorate 2600th Janma Kalyanak Year, M.P. Govt. had declared 6th April 2001 to 6th April 2002 as AHIMSA YEAR. During this period non-veg. dishes were banned in all the Government banquets. General Administration Department of M.P. Govt. has extended this period upto 6th August 2003 by issuing a notification.

AHIMSA, TOLERANCE AND RELIGIOUS ABSOLUTENESS ARE THE SOUL OF THE NATION SAYS PRESIDENT ABDUL KALAM
On the eve of the Independence day, the 15th August, 2002, President A.P.J. Abdul Kalam addressing the nation on Radio and T.V. channels, said that non-violence, mutual tolerance and understanding and religious absoluteness are the heart and soul of the nation and the countrymen should be vigilant enough to protect these eternal values. Mentioning about the unfortunate communal disturbances in Gujarat, he added that any action contemplated against the protection of our traditional values based on ahimsa and religious tolerance could prove disastrous to the very structure of the nation. Addressing the members of Parliament and Legislative Assemblies, he asked them to become the ideal examples for the new generation and show them the right direction to face the future. It is high time that we search our ideals in the present context and act accordingly.

MENACE TO KILL DOGS BY VESTED INTERESTS BE STOPPED SAYS MANEKA GANDHI
SDFB has been planning to get dogs killed in large scale in whole of India because if ABC/ARV is projected success in many places of India they stand to lose in terms of kick-back from vaccinations, bones, dog skin and fertilizer trade and of-course an avenue to garner cheap publicity at cost of animals. However much they have tired they have failed in Bangalore largely due to your support and thanks to the Karnataka High Court. So they have now shifted their focus to whole of the country and are looking for soft targets to restart killing of dogs atleast in some of the parts.They have got in touch with the New Health minister of INDIA, Mr. Shatrughan Sinha, fed him with lies, lies and lies and now want to use him to eliminate dogs all over India. They are using the doctors of Jaipur to counter the truth that Jaipur is free from Rabies and stray dog bites have declined in Jaipur. During the investigations carried out, the finding is that Jaipur project is a runaway success, there are hardly any dogs on the streets, all most all of them are healthy. There are no rabies death for the city but as in case of Bangalore some rabies deaths are reported from neighboring and far away cities where ABC/ARV is not carried out. JAIN TEMPLE UNEARTHED DURING EXCAVATIONS AT BHINMAL (RAJ.)
During construction work at the premises of Shri Parshwa Nath temple at Bhinmal town in the Jalore District of Rajasthan, a 450 years old temple structure has been recently un-earthed at a depth of 30 feet. The temple possesses five images of Jain Tirthankars, which are made in white marble. One inscription on a pillar in the temple premises shows the year 1621 Vikram Samvat, along-with other description about the temple.

OSWAL STHAPANA DIVAS CELEBRATED AT OSIAN AND JODHPUR
To mark the 2459th Sthapana (establishment) of Oswal Jain community on the Sravan Krishna Chaturdashi, the celebrations commenced with a Samuhik worship of Acharya Ratn Prabh Suri Ji Maharaj, who had founded the Oswal community at Osian village, and then the worship of Goddess (Kuldevi) Sachhiyay Mata. A huge gathering of people from Oswal Jain community from different parts of the State had collected there to participate in the celebrations. Later, a programme of discourses by Jain Sadhu and sadhwis was held at Jodhpur and then senior citizens above the age of 80 years were honoured.

ROAD NAMED AS BHAGWAN MAHAVIR SWAMI AHIMSA MARG IN AHMEDABAD
The Standing Committee of the Government of Gujarat headed by its Chairman, Shri Badruddin, decided to name the part of Ring Road as Bhagwan Mahavir Swami Ahimsa Marg (starting from Chiman Bhai Patel Market to Prabodh Bhai Bridge in Sabarmati). Necessary orders are being issued to implement the decision.

RESEARCH INSTITUTE FOR INDIAN ANCIENT JAIN LITERATURE ESTABLISHED AT AHMEDABAD
A Research Institute to explore the ancient Indian religious and philosophical traditions and to re-establish the religious culture amongst the youth, has been recently established at Ahmedabad by the inspiration and guidance of learned saint, Shri Nandi Ghosh Vijay Ji Maharaj, disciple of Shri Vijay Suryodaya Suri Ji. The Institute was inaugurated by famous Mathematician and scientist, Dr. P.C. Vaidya. The web site of the Institute was inaugurated by Dr. Madhusudan Danki, well-known Jain scholar and researcher on Jain scriptures. The function was attended by Shri Shrenik Bhai Kastur Bhai Lal Bhai, Editor of Gujarat Samachar, Shri Shanti Lal Shah and others.

EFFORTS TO END WORLD CONFLICTS THROUGH RELIGION
At a meeting of the World Peace Council, held at Bangkok on the 13th June, 2002, more than 100 religious leaders from all over the world, representing different faiths gathered to deliberate on the issue of ending conflicts among the nations in order to bring peace and prosperity in the world. They used this occasion to take a pledge to work towards reducing sectarian conflicts, especially in Asia and the Middle East. The meeting was attended by representatives of Christian, Buddhist, Jain, Jewish, Muslim and Hindu faiths. A World Council of Religious Leaders has been recently formed with the support of United Nations, as an outcome of the recommendations of UN Millennium World Peace Summit. Mr. Bawa Jain is the Secretary General of Millennium World Peace Summit, which aims to actively intervene in the areas of conflict in order to promote non-violence and peace all over the world.

MRS. SHARDA JAIN CHARGED FOR CORPORATOR'S MURDER CONSPIRACY
Atma Ram Gupta, Delhi Congress Councilor is dead. Gupta is alleged to have been killed by hitmen hired by Mrs. Sharda Jain, another Congress Councilor from Delhi. Sharda and her brother, Raj Kumar, were picked up by the police and the Mrs. Jain apparently broke down and confessed to have committed the crime during questioning. According to the police, Sharda was driven off her mind which led to murder – by Gupta's intimacy with party colleague and Prahladpur Bangar corporator Memwati Barwala. Despite an extra-marital relationship that went back five years, Gupta would of late ignore Sharda in Memwati's presence, said an officer. Blinded by rage, Sharda planned Gupta's murder. JAIN BROTHERS' PLEA REJECTED IN INSURANCE FRAUD CASE
In the year 1979, CBI had charged Jain brothers, V. K. Jain and R. K. Jain for hatching conspiracy to dupe the New India Insurance Company Ltd by obtaining false documents showing the purchase of some valuable goods like cloves, PVC resins and brass scraps claiming that the two ships carrying it sank in mid-sea. In this case the Insurance company was defrauded of crores of Rupees 23 years ago through a bogus claim of a consignment sinking under the sea. A Delhi court on August 27, rejected the plea of the accused Jain Brothers to disband the Commission set up to examine witnesses in Singapore. Designated Judge Gulshan Kumar had recently set up a Special Commission to examine 12 key foreign witnesses in Singapore.

BHADRESHWAR JAIN TEMPLE DEMOLISHED IN GUJARAT
The world-famous Jain Temple of Bhadreshwar has recently been completely demolished because the structure had been rendered unsafe due to the extensive damage from last January's earthquake. The main temple, which was nearly 2,500 years old, used to attract people from all over the country. "It is shocking not only for Jains but everybody in Kutch," says Vanechand Mulchand Doshi, the Manager of the Seth Vardhman Kalyanji Trust, which manages the Bhadreshwar Temple. The demolition work has been completed and temporary arrangement has been made from where pilgrims can have darshan of Mool Nayak Bhagwan Mahaveer and Bhagwan Parashwa Nath. It is reported that over 146 icons, most of them, 500 years to 2500 years old could however be saved from damage. Despite the fact that the temple does not exist anymore now, pilgrims have been visiting the place from across the country for darshan and worship. The Bhadreshwar Temple Managing Committee has taken up the project to reconstruct the Temple as early as possible.

WORLD'S TALLEST JAIN IMAGE OF ADINATH BHAGWAN AT AYODHYAPURAM
The tallest statue of Bhagwan Shri Adinath in Padmasan posture is going to be installed at Vallabhipur near Palitana Jain pilgrimage centre at a cost of Rs. 15 crores. It is made of marble, is going to be 23 feet high and weighs 250 tons. The place where the statue is being built and will be installed, is to called 'Ayodhyapuram' Teerth. The work has been undertaken by Matunga Jain Sangh at Bombay with the inspiration and guidance of Acharya Shri Jin Chandra Sagar Ji and Acharya Shri Hem Chandra Sagar Ji Maharaj, who are presently holding chaturmas there at Matunga Jain Upasraya.

NATIONAL COMMISSION FOR CATTLE CALLS FOR TOTAL BAN ON COW SLAUGHTER
Established in August, 2001, the National Commission for Cattle has recently submitted a 1,500 page report to Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee advocating that cow slaughter be banned in India. Presently, beef forms part of many peoples' diet and is a lucrative export product. So also cow leather earns lot of foreign exchange. Statistically, Shri Ghuman Mal Lodha, M.P. and acting Chairman of the Commission, says, India has 200 million cattle. Killing cattle is considered worse than killing human beings as the animals cannot defend themselves." In the 1,500-page report, Lodha has recommended 51 different solutions such as, "Prohibition of slaughter of the cow and its progeny should be made a fundamental right, and a Central Cattle Protection Rapid Task Force should be set up with offices in each state." It is high time that the Government takes up the matter seriously and accepts the recommendations of the Commission.

Recently, Shri Saubhagya Muni Ji 'Kumud', General Secretary of the Jain Sthanakwasi Shraman Sangh, in a large gathering of Jains at Ahmedabad strongly advocated the need to put a total ban on cow slaughter. Shri Harin Pathak, Central Minister of State for Defence, chief guest on the occasion, agreeing with the Muni, mentioned in his address that ahimsa is the soul of the country and it is the only way to peace and prosperity.

JAIN SADHUS OPPOSE 'GAURAV YATRA
The Gujarat CM, Narendra Modi, is facing stiff resistance to his "Gaurav Yatra" from an unexpected quarter: the Jains of the Saurashtra region. The Jain sadhus and several other Hindu organisations took out a rally on 28th August though the streets of Rajkot, from where Mr. Modi was elected to the State Assembly in February, protesting the reported move by the BJP-led Government at the Centre to issue licences for starting new slaughter houses, many of them believed to be located in the Saurashtra.

MR. V. S. JAIN APPOINTED CHAIRMAN OF STEEL AUTHORITY OF INDIA LIMITED
The PM office announced the name of Mr. V. S. Jain as the next Chairman of Steel Authority of India Limited. He is currently the Director (Finance) of SAIL. Mr. Jain will take-over with effect from October 1, 2002. Mr. Jain, a finance man through out his career, joined SAIL in 1996 as the Director (Finance) after having a long 26 years stint in Indian Oil Corporation (IOC). He was the Executive Director (Finance) for IOC when he left the oil PSU.

ANEKANTA: WHEN MANY BECOME ONE
Sudhamahi Regunathan and Bharatanatyam exponent Kanaka Srinivasan presented an evening based on the jain concept of Anekanta at India International Centre, New Delhi. The audience were treated to superb abhinaya by the veteran dancer. SUDHAMAHI REGUNATHAN and Kanaka Srinivasan teamed up to present a Bharatanatyam programme on 'anekanta', a concept that has been the subject of a series of lectures sponsored by the Delhi centre of the Jain Vishva Bharati Institute. The idea of anekanta that underlies tolerance and ahimsa- which are at the basis of Jainism accepts everything in life as relative and as a combination of opposites in harmonious coexistence. In designing the programme , which illustrated the eighth lecture in the series. Sudhamahi Regunathan attempted to illustrate the concept using poetry from a number of sources, including Sanskrit poetry and the Tamil Ramayana of Kambar. MAHARASHTRA GOV. BANS ANIMAL SLAUGHTER & SALE OF MEAT DURING PARYUSHAN PARVA
The Government of Maharashtra has issued Notification to effect a total ban on the slaughter of animals and the sale of meat in the entire state during the period of Paryushan Parva, from 3rd September to 11th September, 2002.

Mahasati Shri Maya Devi Ji Maharaj, disciple of Mahasati Shri Pragya Devi Ji belonging to Sthanakwasi Jain Shraman Sangh sect attained Devlok at the age of about 100 years just after taking 'Santhara' at 2 P.M. on the 13th July, 2002 at Delhi.
