ADMISSIONS TO NEXT BATCH FOR STUDY OF JAINISM IN SUMMER SCHOOL IN INDIA

The Program of Summer school in Jainism started with just 7 scholars in 2005 and grew to 14 in 2006 and 33 in 2007. The total participation so far is of 50 Scholars. They came from USA, Canada, Russia, Singapore, Thailand and Cambodia (more than 85% from North America) and represented about 20 universities from six countries. Atleast 5 Alumni of ISSJS have already started offering regular classes in Jainism at their school/university. Last year, nearly 500 hundred students were exposed to Jainism and its philosophy. University of Ottawa,  Canada, University of Bombay, Rajasthan University, Maglayatan University (in Aligarh, U.P) and Lal Bahadur Shastri Sanskrit Vidyapeeth in New Delhi are providing Academic support to ISSJS program. As a result of visit to Harvard University in August 2007, we have engaged two highly motivated and qualified Graduate Students from Harvard Divinity School under the work-study program to help us in publicizing ISSJS program at University campuses throughout the world. The aim is to draw the best qualified students and faculty from a larger pool to participate in future ISSJS programs. This program is jointly funded by JAINA, ISJS and the Harvard University Work-study Grants.

Applications have now been invited from very bright and highly motivated scholars, post graduate students and professors from Universities to study Jainism in summer school, conducted by International Summer School of Jain Studies (ISSJS) under the able leadership ("Mission with a Vision") of Prof. Cromwell Crawford, Dr. Sulekh Jain and Dr. Shugan Jain. This is 4th successive year for ISJS course and successful applicants will study along side students from universities in America, Canada, England and few other countries. It has been planned to send 1-2 successful applicants from each of the countries. This is a 1 month and 2 months' intensive course and all local travel, lodging and boarding expenses within India will be borne by ISSJS and the return airfare between the country of applicant and India including Indian visa will be paid by a religious society organizing the seminar.

"The ISJS is structured around a two-tier system, designed to meet scholarly needs of all applicants. The goal of the first level (1 month course) is 'The understanding of the fundamentals of Jainism' in the areas of Religion, Philosophy, History, and Culture. The second level (2 months' course) builds on the first in terms of scope, depth, and intensity, and aims at a proficiency of knowledge that qualifies the student to study at the M.A. level in university. If any Culture, Religion/Philosophy department in Universities in your country or above mentioned countries have any post graduate students/ teachers interested in studying Jainism then please request them to contact any of the following organisers before 31st January, 2008.   Dr. Sulekh Jain, E-Mail : scjain@earthlink.net Dr. Shugan C.
