FOUNDATION LAID FOR NEW JAIN TEMPLE IN LONDON
A new Jain temple is being built at the Oshwal Centre in Potters Bar, North London. London is home to 30,000 Jains. This project will provide 30,000 Jains a new identity. The architectural work is being completed by Mr. Rajesh Sompura, an Indian temple architect. The bulk of the carvings and sculpture will be done in India and assembly and installation work done at temple site. Pujya Chitrabhanu conducted the ceremony for the laying of the first carved stone and Mr. Kantilal Haria of in house kitchen. Over four thousand people from all over London and some from as far a way as Leicester, Northampton and Manchester attended the ceremony. President of Oshwal Association, Mr. Ashwin Shah requested the community to participate fully in this project. Also present were the local Mayor and Mr. Haldar from Indian High Commission who spoke eloquently about the importance of unity. As per the plans, the temple will be sited at the Oshwal Centre on a Greenfield site of approximately ten acres. It will be in the middle of landscaped gardens and walkways, which when viewed from the air represent the Jain symbol of Triloka (the Cosmos). Cow bone char is a fine mixture of cow bone in a power format boiled at highest temperature to process sugar to its current white form. Some breads contain a substance called Cystine, which is full of amino acid, required to be put in bread. Most breads containing Cystine use human hair in production, since human body produces some amino acid. (I am not saying all breads have it, but be careful to check the label on it for this item).

JAINA BECOMES CHARTER SPONSOR OF AHIMSA CENTER AT CALIFORNIA UNIVERSITY
Pomona, June 16, 2004 – JAINA, The Federation of Jain Associations In North America, has pledged $25,000, recently to become Charter Sponsor of the "Ahimsa Center" at State Polytechnic University at Pomona, California. The Ahimsa Center will establish classes in ahimsa philosophy at the university. The center will also create workshops and develop curriculum for schools so that ahimsa is promoted in daily life.

Earlier this year, JAINA initiated a drive in US Congress to promote the idea of establishing a permanent entity for peace and non-violence. However this is the first time that JAINA is leading an effort to support an academic institution. JAINA and the members of Jain Community have contributed over $200,000 to the center. The Ahimsa Center will be the first such center in the nation where non-violence will be looked at as a way of life and as an effective tool for peaceful co-existence, beyond the context of war and peace. The center is established by the efforts of Dr. Tara Sethia, Professor of History and Director of the new Center. Presented by: M.K. Gandhi Institute, National Civil Rights Museum, National Conference for Community and Justice. Period: October, 8-9th, 2004. Hosted by: Christian Brothers University & Rhodes College. Theme: "Teaching to Practice Gandhian Non-violence:Perspectives from Academics and Activists." NEW JAIN TEMPLE IN HARROW, UK
Plans for the proposed temple to be built in Harrow Weald, North - West of London, have been agreed by Harrow Council's development committee. The land for the project has been acquired by the Mahavir Foundation. ANNUAL JAIN LECTURE AT TORONTO UNIVERSITY
Prof. Lawrence A. Babb of Amherst College, Massachusetts, USA gave the annual Roop Lal Jain Lecture on 'Jainism and Social Identity', organized by the Centre for South Asian Studies, University of Toronto. He explored the beliefs and practices of five distinct groups - Dahima Brahmins, Agnikul Rajputs, Mahesvaris, Khandelval Jains, and Oshwals of Rajasthan. He also looked at the genealogies of these groups and the social and religious background to the emergence of a distinctive Jain identity, such as the abandonment by Jains of animal sacrifice, which Jains regard as violent and a form of himsa.

VICE-PRESIDENT, SHEKHAWAT INAUGURATES JAIN GOLDEN TEMPLE AT FALNA
For the first time, Jain golden temple has been built in the country by the Jain community of Falna in Rajasthan (near Ranakpur). The specialty of the temple is that about 90 Kg. of gold was donated by the ladies of the community in the local region for the adoration of temple dome and idol. Shri Bhairon Singh Shekhawat, Vice-President of India inaugurated the temple and joined the installation ceremonies along-with other celebrities, like Shri L.M. Singhvi and others. He expresses the urgent need to develop essential infra-structural facilities at Falna so that pilgrims, devotees and tourists could be attracted to visit the place. The entire Falna-Sirohi region is very rich in ancient Jain art and culture and it should be developed as big tourist attraction, apart from being a religious centre.

JHARKHAND STATE ALLOWS MINORITY STATUS TO JAIN COMMUNITY
Shri Shaligram Yadav , Chairman of the State Academic Council has declared at a meeting held recently that minority status is being given to Jain community of Jhankhand. Shri Kamal Khan, Chairman, State Minorities Commission who was present at the meeting also stated that Jharkhand State has in line with other States, like Chhatisgarh, M.P., Karnataka etc. has accepted the Jain community as in minority category and they will enjoy all the privileges due to them. It was also announced that all girl students from Jain community, studying in 8th to 10th class will be distributed bicycles free of cost.

COMMEMORATIVE STAMP ON DR. INDRA CHAND SHASTRI
Indian Postal Department released a commemorative postage stamp on great philosopher, exceptional author and an authority on poetics Pro. Dr. Indra Chandra Shastri on 27th May 2004. Dr. Indra Chandra Shastri was a pursuer of individual spiritualism who was inspired by Jain Anekanta. Born on May 27, 1912 at Dabwali Mandi, now in Sirsa district of Haryana, Dr. Indra Chandra Shastri came to Bikaner for education where he studied Sanskrit and Prakrit. He campaigned against Bal Diksha, a practice of forcible adoption of poor children by Jain ascetics in Rajasthan, prevalent in those days. This resulted in the tabling of a bill in the Assembly of Bikaner. As a recognition of his pioneering efforts and creative talent, he was awarded the ‘Sahitya Seva Samman’, by the Hindi Academy. He was also conferred the ‘Sahitya Ratna Alankaran’ by the Vice-Chancellor of Delhi University. The President of India awarded him a ‘Certificate of Honor’ on August 15, 1986. WILD LIFE TRUST TAKES INITIATIVE TO SAVE SHARK-WHALE FISHES ON GUJARAT COAST
The State of Gujarat possesses the longest sea-coast in the whole country and Whale-Shark fishes arrive on this coast during the months of April to July. Often the fishermen are tempted to catch these rare fishes to fetch a heavy price. In order to offer protection to these rare varieties, the Wild Life Trust of India has recently launched an intensive programme to create consciousness amongst the people to save these animals and not to harm them or kill them. The revered preacher, Shri Morari Bapu has also been inspiring people of the coastal region to give all possible protection to these animals and save them from extinction.

ANIMAL PERFORMANCE IN CIRCUS BANNED AT JALANDHAR, PUNJAB
May 28, Following the objections from the Animal Welfare Board of India, the district administration yesterday banned performance by animals in circus here. Performance by animals in circus show was suspended in Moga also on May 12 when the Board team led by executive member Dr. Sandip Jain found that the circus management was not filing mandatory monthly fitness certificates of animals with the board and the local authorities. Circus shows were stopped, following directions by the Magistrate, Mr G.S. Khaira after Dr Sandip Jain complained to the Jalandhar Deputy Commissioner Mr Ashok Gupta, that the circus was violating provisions of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act-1960 and the Performing Animals Registration Rules 2001.

PRESIDENT KALAM SAVED A PEACOCK SUFFERING FROM CANCER
About a week ago, while on morning walk in Mughal Gardens, The President noticed a peacock with growth around its eye. The President immediately informed this to a Veterinary Surgeon. He operated it soon and removed the tumor which was extending up to mouth. If President had not noticed it, it would have died out of starvation as it was unable to eat. Now the Peacock is showing signs of recovery and it is again returned to nature's lap. According to Officials whenever President Kalam notices a sick bird or animal, he sends for Veterinary staff and enquires about it the next day.

GUJ. HIGH COURT STAYS UNAUTHORIZED CONSTRUCTION AT GIRNAR JI
On a petition filed by the residents of Junagarh alongwith the State Archaeology department, the High Court of Gujarat has stayed any further unauthorised construction on the 5th peak of Girnar Ji mountain, which is believed to be the land of salvation ( Moksha Bhumi) of Tirthankar Shri Nemi Nath Ji. Bharatvarshiya Digambar Jain Teerth Kshetra Committee, Mumbai as well as Shri Bharatvarshiya Digambar Jain (Teerth Sanrakshini) Mahasabha, Lucknow also offered their full cooperation in obtaining the stay order. The matter is still being pursued strongly by the Digambar Mahasabha with the Chief Minister, Narendra Modi to save the holy Siddha Kshetra from unscrupulous people.

ANCIENT JAIN IDOLS FOUND IN CHANDIGARH
Breaking up earth in the basement of Burail’s Pracheen Shiv Mandir at Chandigarh, labourers discovered ancient idols — believed to be hundreds of years old. The deities, reportedly belonging to Digambar Jain community, have been taken into possession by the administration. The discovery of idols can open a new chapter about city’s history, if it is confirmed that the deities actually belong to the Jain community — at least this is what a Professor in Punjab University’s Department of History believes.They too are reportedly looking into the discovery. Temple authorities claim that the idols were unearthed between May 29 and June 1 while the labourers were digging in the basement. Temple’s sabha general secretary Kashmiri Lal Gupta says about 10 to 12 idols have been pulled out with great care and caution. All idols have been carved out of stone. Even though the temple itself is believed to be centuries old, the find took everyone by surprise. Residents and experts who witnessed the “great discovery” claim that the idols are of Lord Mahavira in standing and sitting positions. Sculptures carved in the shape of elephant and lion have also been found. The witnesses claim that some of the idols were broken. For so many days they were lying without security, they allege.Though exact information about was temple’s history is not readily available, experts claim that there was a mount where the temple stands today. They add that “samadhis” of nine sadhus is also present on the temple premises. The ASI authorities, however, refused to confirm the claim. ILLEGALLY CONSTRUCTED SWETAMBAR JAIN TEMPLE TO BE RAZED IN MUMBAI
The Bombay High Court has asked the Mumbai Municipal Corporation to demolish an illegal Jain temple in Jagdusha Nagar, Ghatkopar (east), in eight weeks. Following a public interest litigation filed by a resident, Satish Bane, the division bench of acting Chief Justice A. P. Shah and Justice S.U. Kamdar reprimanded the BMC for not taking any action against the illegal temple despite court orders.The judges rejected a plea by advocate A Y Thackeray who appeared for the trustees Shri Shwetambar Murti Poojak Tapogachh Jain Sang Pedhi. “We are trying to get the temple legalised and an application is pending with the Maharashtra government.” The BMC informed the court that the temple was illegally constructed in 1998 and it had issued orders for demolition under section 351. Bane said that the area where the temple was being constructed was reserved for a recreational ground and a playground. The plot belonged to the Jagdusha Nagar Plot Owners Association, an association of 40 buildings in the area. Bane said that the trustees had illegally constructed the temple.

Priyal (Age Eight years) must be brought back and should be advised that she may become Sadhvi at the age of 20 if she wish to be then. It is true that, this is not an age to bring someone in this institution of Sadhu Sangh. Let Sadhu Sangh and Shravak Sangh make some of the qualifying characteristic for the person to accept Diksha. DIKSHA CEREMONY
1. Ruby Bansal, re-christened by Acharya, Dr. Shiv Muni, as Shashank Muni has joined the saintly order in Jan Shwetambar Sthanakwasi sect after his Diksha at Ropar on the 28th May, 2004. Ruby has been already leading a life, devoted to the cause of vegetarianism, ahimsa and compassion and has earned a name for his virtuosity and ethics. He has been initiated as Jain Muni by Acharya Shiv Muni, having been inspired by his discourses and programmes on self-introspection, self-restraint and self-purification. After coming in contact with the Acharya, he developed a strong sense of detachment, austerity and righteousness which led him to leave the family and worldly chores and move on the path of spiritual contemplation, abstinence and renouncement. Thousands od devotees joined the celebrations held in Roper town to mark the holy occasion. Several saints and sadhwis were present at the time of diksha to bless the newly-initiated saint.

ATOMIC ENERGY ACT REQUIRED TO BE REVIEWED- S.K.JAIN, CMD, NPC
22 June , A total review of the Atomic Energy Act is under way to find out areas where modifications are required to enable private participation, both by Indian or foreign companies, for the construction of nuclear power projects in the country, according to S.K. Jain, Chairman and Managing Director, Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd. The Atomic Energy Act controls nuclear activities in the country. According to Mr. Jain, the amendments to the Act will be passed by the Parliament shortly ,which will help in joint ventures and 100 per cent private participation in building nuclear power plants in the country.

Dr. K.H. KAMAL P. NANAVATI ( JAIN ) IS OPERATIONAL HEAD OF RELIANCE INFOCOM
The Reliance group has appointed stalwart Mr. Kamal P Nanavaty as national operational head of Reliance Infocomm. Before assuming the reins at Reliance Infocomm, Nanavaty headed the polymers business at Reliance Industries and till recently, he was also the chief mentor of Reliance India Mobile`s Delhi operations. As the national business head, Nanavaty will work closely with the Reliance group central leadership team that includes the Ambani brothers, Manoj Modi, Hital Meswani and Nikhil Meswani among others. It is understood that, Nanavaty has Mukesh Ambani`s mandate to put in place a new national operational team to reinforce Infocomm`s marketing, sales, commercial, services, networks, customer care, HR and revenue functions.

NEWLY ELECTED PARLIAMENT MEMBERS FELICITATED BY JAIN SAMAJ, DELHI
The Jain Samaj of Delhi organised celebrations to felicitate newly elected Members of Parliament. The function was organised by Shri. Swadesh Bhushan Jain. The function was organised at Mahavir Kendra, a Jain Body representing all Jain Sects. The honored Members were Shri Sandip Dikshit, Shri Pushp Jain, Smt. Krishna Tirath. Shri Dilip Gandhi, ex cabinet minister in Central Government and Shri Vijay Darda member Rajyasabha also attended the function. Shri Swadesh Bhushan Jain, Director Punjab Kesari introduced the dignitaries and congratulated them on joining fourteenth Lok Sabha. The honored members expressed their gratitude and committed to work for the society.
