About the book

The eternal mystery of the world is its intelligibility.
- Albert Einstein

Jainism, one of the oldest religions of the world, truly echoes this sentiment of intelligibility by having created a spiritual system that leads to a complete harmony of existence. This book pulls out 25 centuries of the religion's existence and displays to the reader a lavish array of faith, art and architecture. It begins with an insight to Jainism by the renowned Dr. L.M. Singhvi whose words have woven together its antiquity, development, beliefs and practices and only whets the appetite for more.  A section on Jain art magnificently highlights the interrelatedness of the various arts, the most popular Jain temples and pilgrim centers in India and abroad and understanding of their essential philosophy that perhaps goes back many millennia. The book is a multi-faceted perspective into Jainism and its architectural forms that today are an integral part of India's survivng precious cultural heritage.Tarun Chopra has finely crafted the words into a visual treat. The dreamlike Dilwara Temples at Mt. Abu, elaborately carved temples at Palitana, the celestial beauty of the Ranakpur temples, the celebrated statue of Gomateshwara and 11 such exotic Jain pilgrimages in India have all been depicted through lush pictures and vivid presentations. Another section covering some exotic Jain temples across the globe depicts the spread of the religion over the later half of the 20th century. Creating an ambience through the stunning pictures, the book takes you through a virtual tour, bringing to life the unique characteristics of each of these temples. With over 200 pictures, together with captivating words, it is an enthralling journey, spanning across centuries. So get ready to touch the soul of the religion and its many manifestations with this superb display that is a living record of aspirations to immortalize faith and create heaven on earth. 184 Pages Hardback Size: 10"x12"Printed in Singapore Price Rs. 2500 £39.95 , $59.95

About the Photographer
Tarun Chopra was born in Delhi but his formative years were spent in Jaipur. Later, the desire to learn a foreign language brought him to the Jawaharlal Nehru University, where he studied Spanish. He then lived in Spain for some time to hone his language skills before returning to India. An undying love for travel and photography has taken Tarun to many exotic parts of this fascinating sub-continent. For Tarun to photograph Jain temples of India was a dream come true. A self-taught photographer, Tarun has come a long way since an American travel company used his photographs for its promotional brochure. In 1995, Tarun published his first book Majestic India, a picture-essay which already has gone into its third edition. His second effort, Majestic Jaipur, a runaway success, was published recently. His third book Holy Cow and the other Indian Stories followed, and was widely acclaimed. After Kama Sutra, Jain Temples: In India and around the World is his fifth book.
