SIX YEARS OLD CHILD MUNI RECITES AND EXPLAINS 1400 SHLOKAS FROM JAIN SHASTRA
Possibly, the youngest amongst all Jain saints during the last 1000 years, Bal Muni Tribhuvan Ratna Vijay Ji,
was
accepted to Jain order by well-known Acharya Shri Gun Ratna Vijay Ji Maharaj at the mass Diksha ceremony held last year at Palitana. The young muni has already earned his name at this
tender age by his extra-ordinary powers of memorising shlokas and explaining their interpretation in Hindi or Gujarati languages. So far, he has already learnt by heart 1400 shlokas in Prakrit and sanskrit from Jain scriptures. He can explain their meaning. It is miraculous to see that he has not
only remembered the shlokas but he gives a clear and simple elucidation of each of the verses. He is strictly following all the codes meant for Jain sadhus and has been carrying on with his religious studies under the guidance of other saints. Though belonging to a
multi-millionaire family of Saurashtra, he along-with his father, mother and sister had taken Diksha together from Acharya Maharaj. The Chaturmas of Acharya Gun Ratna Surishwar Ji this year is being held at Girdhar Nagar, Shahi Bag in Ahmedabad. The Bal Muni is also in the same group with the Acharya.

ANIMAL WELFARE ISSUE IN COLD STORAGE AFTER THE EXIT OF MENAKA GANDHI
The burning issues concerning animal protection and animal welfare and closing down of slaughter-houses in the country seems to have been put into cold storage with the removal of
Smt. Menaka Gandhi and Mr. C.P. Thakur from the Central Ministry. The portfolio of Animal welfare has not been allocated to any other Minister or attached to any other Ministry and as a result, no one is owing any responsibility for the committees constituted earlier by Mrs. Menaka Gandhi for looking after the subject of animal cruelty. It is understood that the powerful lobby belonging to multi-national pharmaceutical companies had all along been working against the Animal Welfare Ministry because it was totally opposed to the use of animals for research work. With the support of Mr.
C.P. Thakur, the lobby had taken up the matter with the Prime Minister and it succeeded in their effort to get the ouster of Mrs. Menaka gandhi from the Ministry. The Jain samaj must now take up the matter unitedly so that killing of poor animals in the name of research is stopped immediately.

JAIN MUNI
MAITARYA JI M.S. CONTINUES WITH HIS SANTHARA FOR THE LAST 36 DAYS
Muni Maitarya Ji Maharaj belonging to Terapanth Dharam Sangh , staying at Udasar near Bikaner in Rajasthan had accepted 'Santhara' (Fast for renouncing the world till death) more than 35 days ago. Prior to that, he had undergone 7 days intensive austerity (Tapasya). Muni Ji had taken diksha at the age of 50 years under Acharya Tulsi and at present, he is 75 years old. He is strictly observing all the restrictions, to be followed during the period of santhara. Visitors, in large numbers from far and near are coming to the place every day to have his darshan and to pay respects to him, praying for the redemption and salvation of the holy soul. According to the news, he is in quite stable condition, talking briefly and giving his blessings to all.
SCULPTURES OF TIRTHANKARAS DISCOVERED
Sculptures of twenty-four Tirthankaras, in huge quantities of 1230, 1247 and 1239, varying between 1 foot and 5 feet height, have been discovered during excavation recently at Virochan Nagar, 20 K. M. away from Sanand. It is believed that this was a saved collection during Mughal attack.
MAGNIFICIENT ANCIENT JAIN TEMPLES AT RAJ SAMAND
(RAJ.) IN DILAPIDATED CONDITION
Raj Samand District in Udaipur division of Rajasthan possesses rich ancient heritage
of significant historical importance but the temples here, unlike those at Mt. Abu and Jaisalmer have not drawn the attention of the Archeology or Tourism Departments so far and these remain in a state of neglect. It is said that at one time, the north-eastern region of the district had hundreds of Jain temples around but with the passage of time, most of these temples have been destroyed and lost. Presently, only five temples, one belonging to Digambar and four belonging to Shwetambar sects exist in village Delwara, at a distance of 40 km. from Rajsamand and located on the National Highway no. 8. These temples, supposed to be 900 years old, are left behind out of the vast heritage which lack proper care and maintenance, lying in dilapidated condition and are losing their identity.
The State Departments of Archeology and Tourism have so far shown little concern to take care of these monuments, which possess exquisite architectural beauty and in no way less than those at Dilwara temples at Mt. Abu. The Departments concerned have not even made a mention about these magnificient temples anywhere in their publicity material. The main temple, having an image of Bhagwan Parshwa nath Ji also carries images of several other Tirthankars, such as Kunthu nath ji, Sambhav nath ji, Suparshwa nath ji, Ajit nath ji, Shanti nath ji, Sumati nath ji and Mahavir Swamy, which are installed in an under-ground cellar. The sabha Mandap on the main floor, in front of the image of Mool Nayak, is resting on 444 pillars, the carved designs of each of which is different from the other one. On the entrance gate (Toran Dwar), statues of Brahma, Laxmi and Sarswati are installed. Besides, several images of exquisitely carved gods and goddesses, are installed in a hall, which rests on 108 pillars each of which are carved in ancient style.
The management of the temples at present is reportedly under the control of Jain Mahasabha, Udaipur but possibly due to lack of resources, adequate care as well as publicity is lacking. It is high time that some of the Jain organisation, which have the means and resources can come forward and take over the work of their overall maintenance and development of the entire premises, along-with the building of necessary facilities for the stay of pilgrims visiting the place for worship. It would go a long way in preserving an ancient heritage of Jain society and attract pilgrims from all over the country and abroad.

ACHARYA GUN RATNA SURI JI DEMANDS CLOSURE OF SLAUGHTER HOUSES IN
GUJARAT
The Jain Acharya Shri Gun Ratna Surishwar Ji Maharaj expressed his deep agony at the ever-increasing number of slaughter-houses in the country, and that too, during the Ahimsa Year officially declared by the Government. He was giving his discourse at Ahmedabad after his Mangal-Pravesh into Girdhar Nagar-Shahibag Upasray, where a huge congregation had been arranged in his honour. He said that on one side, the Government was celebrating the various functions concerning Bhagwan Mahavir and on the other side, it was allowing the merciless killing of poor and mute animalsin large numbers every day. Many eminent persons from Jain Samaj were honoured on this occasion.

14TH CENTURY STATUE OF BHAGWAN PARSHWANATH RECOVERED AT MANDSORE
An ancient statue of Tirthankar Parshwa nath Ji, supposed to belong to the 14th century has been recovered during digging in the base of the river Shivna near Mandsore town in Madhya Pradesh. The statue, made of stone, according to Archeologist, Shri Kailash Chandra Pande, is about 800 years old and belongs to Digambar sect. It shows Bhagwan Parshwa nath in padmasan posture resting over 'Nagkundali'. The Collector of the District has ordered to place the statue for public viewing in Yashodharman museum. U. P. BANS GUTKA AND PAN MASALA BY THE ORDER OF HIGH
COURT
In line with the action taken by the Government of Maharashtra, The Uttar Pradesh Government has also taken steps to ban the manufacture, sale and distribution of Gutka and Pan Masala by the order of the High Court of U.P. at Allahabad with immediate effect. The court accepted that the manufacture and sale of these items was against the spirit of Article 21 of the Constitution, being harmful and injurious to human health and therefore, a ban on their manufacture, sale and distribution was necessary. It is understood that the State Government had already issued notices to various companies in State, engaged in their manufacture and sale.
The Government of Rajasthan is also seriously considering now to promulgate the orders to impose ban on Gutka and Pan Masala all over the State , keeping in view the increasing number of Cancer cases and adverse effect on the younger generation, even though the ban would mean a big loss of revenue to the State. Before imposing the ban orders, however, the Goverment would like to ensure that people having vested interest will not be able
to obtain stay order from the courts.
Late
news: It is reported that Supreme Court of India has recently allowed a
stay on the orders passed by the Allahabad High Court.
STILL ANOTHER THEFT OF JAIN STATUES FROM INDORE
TEMPLE
Several cases of theft of valuable and sacred statues of Tirthankars from Jain temples have occurred and have been reported in these columns in the recent past. Hardly in any of the cases, the culprits have been brought to book and punished. The local authorities have invariably been taking these cases of theft in a light manner. The result is that the reoccurrence of theft cases goes on. The latest one is what happened in a Digambar Jain temple in the heart of Indore city itself very recently. Five statues, made of ashta-dhatu, belonging to Shri Adi nath Ji, Muni Suvrat Ji, Parshwa Nath Ji, Mahavir Swamy and Bahu Bali Ji were removed by thieves from Parshwa Dham Digambar Jain temple at Vaishno devi Nagar there. It was found that the thieves had entered the temple during night time by breaking open the jali in the steel window. The matter had been promptly reported to the local police the very next morning and the police urged to arrest the culprits immediately.
