mahavir jayanti celebrations

SPECIAL MESSAGE BY ACHARYA MAHAPRAGNA ON MAHAVIR JAYANTI DAY - One aspect of celebrating Mahavir Jayanti is to remember one of the greatest souls whose teachings on Non-violence, Non-possession and Anekant (a multidimensional philosophy of Non-absolutism) are unique throughout the world. Lord Mahavira observed, experienced and realized that deliberation on cause of violence is incomplete without deliberation on possession. Thinking on Non-possession is essential for thinking on Non-violence. We want to change action and outcome but with less emphasis on cause of action. Success eludes us in such attempts. Violence is an effect, its cause is possession. Violence is on increase in present day world. It's reason lies in attachment to material objects. Attachment is basic feature of possession. Lord Mahavira said “one can not absolve of attachment without relinquishing the lust for attachment and Non-Violence can not decline without relinquishing attachment.”

PRESIDENT -“On the auspicious occasion of Mahavir Jayanti, I extend my greetings and good wishes to all my countrymen. Bhagwan Mahavira preached ahimsa, truth and compassion, which is the need of the hour. Let us on this day resolve to foster the values of Ahimsa in society”. The President has sent her greetings from Mexico City.

VICE PRESIDENT - "Bhagwan Mahavir’s life and teachings are a beacon of light to guide the mankind on the path of humanism, non-violence and universal love. His teachings have the power to transform the society and free mankind from the shackles of ignorance, violence and moral decay. On this occasion, let us imbibe the enlightened teachings of Bhagwan Mahavir to usher in peaceful and harmonious society."

PRIME MINISTER -  "The ideals of Lord Mahavira inspire all to lead a life of compassion and sacrifice. May this festival strengthen in one and all the commitment to non violence, truth and harmony”.

SONIA GANDHI -  "His words can inspire us to a path based on values and principles rather than aggression and ambition, and a lifestyle driven by need rather than greed. His creed of non-violence towards all beings can also teach us how to preserve our environment and restore ecological balance at a time when  the world is filled with growing violence and materialism, Lord Mahavir's noble teachings assume even greater relevance".

MAHAVIR JAYANTI CELEBRATIONS IN PUNE
'Serving humans is serving God,' said Bhagwan Mahavir, the revered Jain Saint. Diligently following his teachings and spreading his word far and wide are thousands of followers born in a time when his wisdom is most needed. An organisation committed to spreading Mahavir's word is the Sri Jain Yuvak Sanghtana. The Sanghatna will  mark the Mahavir Jayanti celebrations  by holding a unique blood donation camp. It aims to collect 10,000 bottle of blood from all over Pune. The Sanghtana will establish 30 blood collection centres, which will collect blood between 8 am to 4 pm. "This is a first of its kind camp in Pune," states Sampat Jain, chairman of the Sanghatana. To encourage blood donation, the donors will be given a gift on behalf of builder Gulabchandji Gundesha.

PATNA, DEMAND FOR HOLIDAY MARK MAHAVIR JAYANTI - The Jain community in Patna on Friday took out a rally to mark the birth of Lord Mahavir while also pressing for their demand of declaring the Mahavir Jayanti a state holiday since Mahavir was born in the state of Bihar. Pradeep Jain, a senior office-bearer of the Jain Sangh in Patna, expressed his disappointment with the state government for not declaring Mahavir Jayanti a state holiday. "Jains have only one day in a year to celebrate their faith and that too was taken away by the state government. This is highly troubling since Bihar is the birth place of Lord Mahavir," Pradeep Jain said adding the government was clearly ignoring the religious sentiments of the Jains in Bihar.

UNVEILING OF LARGEST STATUE OF LORD ADINATH NEAR BILASPUR CHOWK IN GURGAON BY GOVERNOR A. R. KIDWAI Chandigarh, April 20 Governor A.R. Kidwai today said the weapon of non-violence is far more stronger than the strength of power and all countries of the world will have to adopt non-violence to save mankind from extinction. Stating this while speaking at a function of Jain Samaj after the unveiling of a statue of Lord Adinath near Bilaspur chowk in Gurgaon The Governor said Lord Adinath in pre-historic times taught mankind to grow food grains through agriculture and to progress by acquiring knowledge. “The message of non-violence given by Lord Adinath is more relevant in today’s world filled with nuclear and chemicals weapons,” he said, adding that in our own country, Mahatma Gandhi used non-violence to get the country freed from the chains of slavery. He said the United Nations Organisations also recognised the message and last year it decided to observe October 2 as non-violence day every year. JAIN IDOLS BELONGING TO 12TH CENTURY RECOVERED AT PUSHKAR IN RAJASTHAN
During excavation work on Savitri Marg in Pushkar near Ajmer in Rajasthan, twenty-seven rare and artistic statues of Jain Tirthankar Bhagwan Mahavir and various deities have been recovered, all in broken form at a depth of about four feet. After recovery by the workers working at the site of excavation, local municipal administration has taken the statues under its safe custody. According to the Curator of Government museum at Ajmer, these idols belong to 11th to 12th century period. Such statues of Jain Tirthankars have been recovered in the past also. It is believed that thousands of years before Pushkar was known as Padmavati Nagari, which was heavily populated by Jain community and ruled by jain kings and many Jain temples existed here. Later, most of these temples were destroyed, the idols were beheaded and buried below the earth by Hindu fanatics and diehards and the Jain idols were replaced by Hindu idols.

MURSHIDABAD, BANGLADESH JAIN TEMPLE TO BE RE-INSTALLED IN GUJARAT
Gandhinagar, April 18 Made of precious black touchstone, it was built by eminent jeweller Jagat Sheth Manik Chand 300 years ago. A 300-year-old Jain temple made of precious black touchstone (kasuati patthar) at Murshidabad in West Bengal will be reinstalled at the sprawling Jain Derasar campus at Borij village on April 25. Recently the community shifted the temple, built by eminent jeweller Jagat Sheth Manik Chand, to the famous Vishwa Maitri Dham on the outskirts of Gandhinagar. It will be reinstalled there along with the idol of Bhagwan Parshwanath. A four-day religious programme beginning April 22 will be held at the campus to mark the reinstallation ceremony, which will be attended by prominent Jain leaders and sadhus from across the country, including Acharya Padmasagar Surishwarji. Chief Minister Narendra Modi has also been invited to grace the religious ceremony. Acharya Padmasagar Surishwarji told reporters that the decision to shift the historical temple was taken in view of the dwindling population of the Jain community in Murshidabad. With the world-famous Akshardham standing just a few yards away from the Borij Derasar, the black touchstone temple would be an added attraction for the tourists.

ANCIENT IDOLS FOUND IN GUJARAT
The Palaviya Jain temple in the walled city here is seeing an unusual rush of devotees - and art lovers - to catch a glimpse of 35 ancient idols recovered  during the temple's reconstruction recently. The idols, said to have been crafted during the 14th century, are of the Jain deities Parshavnath, Adinath, Devendranath and other Tirthankars. Vikram Samwat 1310,1320,1330,1335 and 1340 are the inscriptions on these idols, clearly etching the years according to the Hindu calendar when they were made.  Some of the idols are of marble and black stone while a few are cast in metal. The idols offer a fascinating peep into the cultural history of ancient Gujarat. The place formed part of King Dharavarsha Parmar's kingdom of Chadaravti extending up to Mount Abu. The king and his younger brother Chandra Singh Parmar had embraced Jainism.

WEST BENGAL GOVERNMENT ACCORDS MINORITY STATUS TO JAIN SAMAJ
The Government of West Bengal has finally accorded the minority status to Jain community vide its gazette notification dated, the 18h February, 2008. Seven other states in the country have already granted this status to Jain community earlier, namely, Karnataka, Madhya Pradesh, Chhatisgarh, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Maharashtra and Rajasthan. West Bengal, thus becomes eighth state in the country to accept Jain community as minority. Jain community in Delhi demands minority status. The Jain community in the capital is raising the pitch for minority status on par with the Buddhists, Christians, Sikhs, Muslims and Parsis, listed as notified minority groups under the Delhi Minorities. “We do not believe in Jagatguru Shankaracharya, we have our own spiritual identity”.

SUPREME COURT UPHOLDS DECISION OF AHMEDABAD CORPORATION TO CLOSE SLAUGHTER HOUSES FOR NINE DAYS DURING PARYUSHAN PARVA - New Delhi, March 15, 2008: The Supreme Court has deprecated the growing intolerance of exhibition of certain films or paintings and said such dangerous tendencies must be put down with an iron hand. The court made these observations while upholding the action of the Ahmedabad Corporation in closing down slaughter houses in the city for nine days during the period of the Jain festival Paryushan. The Bench, consisting of Justices H. K. Sema and Markandey Katju, said the closure was a reasonable restriction and would not violate Article 19 1 (g) of the Constitution. The Bench said: “Since India is a country of great diversity, it is absolutely essential, if we wish to keep our country united, to have tolerance and respect for all communities and sects. It was due to the wisdom of our founding fathers that we have a Constitution which is secular in character and which caters to the tremendous diversity in our country.” In the instant case, the Bench said: “One should not be touchy about a short restriction when it is being done out of respect for the sentiments of a particular section of society. The great Emperor Akbar himself used to remain a vegetarian for a few days every week out of respect for the vegetarian section of Indian society and out of respect for his Hindu wife. We too should have a similar respect for the sentiments for others, even if they are a minority sect.”  The Bench allowed the appeals against a judgment of the Gujarat High Court, which quashed the order of closure of slaughter houses.

INCURABLE DISEASES NOW BEING CURED SUCCESSFULLY BY SPIRITUAL TREATMENT - Spiritualism has been used for obtaining mental peace and tranquility, preventing evil thoughts and ensuring healthy life. Spiritual practices, yoga and meditation are now being increasingly accepted as techniques for preventing physical illnesses and for leading tension-free and healthy life. The universally accepted "Navakar Mantra" itself has been used as a powerful tool for eradicating all types of ailments, worries and tension from the mind. "Aiso panch namukkaro, Savv Paav Panasano", meaning that these above-mentioned five entities, if recited with full concentration and faith would enable one to get rid of all the sins committed by him, which could be the cause of diseases.

One of the highly dedicated devotee, Shri Labh Chand Jain, residing in Jodhpur and just about to reach 60 years, is a brilliant example of a spiritualist, who has been able to invoke the Almighty and draw strength (energy) from Him in order to pass it on to the suffering patients and cure them from their sufferings. He He had drawn the inspiration and guidance for carrying out spiritual endeavors from two Jain saints, who were disciples of Acharya Shri Jai Mal Ji maharaj. They inspired him to take up the true path of spiritualism, studied various scriptures, under the guidance of both the saints and then started practising, what he had acquired to heal all types of patients, suffering from incurable diseases, often in advanced stages, such as Cancer, Diabetes, Fits, Convulsions, Paralysis, Cardiac problems, Kidney problems, cerebral problems, diseases of knee joints, lumber pains and others. He has been practicing spiritualism at Jodhpur for the last 25 years, with high degree of success. Hundreds of persons have been benefited by his miraculous therapy, which needs no medicines, no expenses and no precautions, except that he has to lead simple life, observe self control (Sayyam) and take vegetarian meals.

His procedure for healing consists of recitation of navakar mantra and performing ‘dhyan’ in order to draw energy in the form of electro-magnetic waves or spiritual vibrations and store them in his body. Then he starts healing each patient one by one, disbursing the stored energy by way of messaging with pure butter oil (ghee) and wrapping the affected part with cotton and bandage. For patients staying far away, he calls them for a few days and then subsequently, the energy in the form of spiritual vibrations is transmitted to the patient, wherever he is. The entire process of spiritual treatment, as developed by him, is a combination of reiki, telepathy, 'nadi vigyan' and meditation.. He would be happy to attend to any queries or enquiries.  (Mobile No. 093142 13109)

ADITYA VORA CHOSEN FROM AROUND THE WORLD TO GREET POPE
March 16, 2008: A Haverford College student who follows the Jain religion has been picked to greet Pope Benedict XVI during the pontiff's first trip to the United States. Aditya Vora, 21, a senior from Kings Park, N.Y., is among five young adults chosen from around the world for the honor. Others will represent the Buddhist, Jewish, Hindu, and Islamic traditions. The pope will be in the States from April 15 to 20. The meeting, set for April 17 in Washington, is meant to embody the pope's belief that religions must unite to achieve peace. On April 15, the pontiff will arrive in Washington. Afterward, he will welcome 10 prominent religious figures, including Vora's father, Arvind, a member of the Federation of Jain Associations in North America.  At the April 17 meeting, Vora will shake the pope's hand and give him a small metal cube, according to the Rev. James Massa, who helped organize the event. The cube represents the Jain principles of nonviolence, truthfulness, tolerance of others' views, and never stealing or being swayed by materialism, Vora said. The ceremony is expected to last 10 to 15 minutes. Jains believe that their religion, centered in India, had no beginning, Vora said. Instead, 24 teachers, or tirthankaras, guided its formation by achieving, then teaching, the path to salvation.

JAIN COMMUNITY IN DELHI DEMANDS MINORITY STATUS FROM CM
The Jain community in the capital is raising the pitch for minority status on par with the Buddhists, Christians, Sikhs, Muslims and Parsis, listed as notified minority groups under the Delhi Minorities Commission Act, 1999. Members of the community want to incorporate Jainism, the religion of the community, as a subject in Jain schools. The capital and its adjoining areas have eight Jain schools. They are not being able teach Jainism to their children because most of the Jain schools in Delhi are partially funded by the government, which doesn't allow the teaching of any particular religion at schools unless it is a minority community. 'The government is ignoring the community. We want minority status as enshrined (under Article 25) in the Indian Constitution, which empowers the government to accord minority status to six marginal ethno-religious groups, so that we can teach Jainism to our children in schools run by us. We don't want reservations in jobs or in education,' Chakresh Jain, head of the Delhi Jain Samaj.

Members of the Jain Samaj had assembled at Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit's home to celebrate Mahavir Jayanti, the birth anniversary of Lord Mahavira. Chakresh Jain said children of the community here were losing touch with their traditional culture because they were not being taught Jainism in schools. Underscoring the need for minority status, Chakresh Jain said Jains were included in the list of minorities in seven states across the country - Maharashtra, Karnataka, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and West Bengal  According to 2001 Census, the Jain community forms .45 percent of the population.

MEAT SELLERS PROTEST ABATTOIR SHUTDOWN DURING JAIN FESTIVAL
Mumbai, April 15 The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s decision to shut down all city slaughterhouses during the Jain festival of Paryushan has run into opposition from meat sellers. The Brihanmumbai Hindu Khatik Samaj Sanghatna, an association of meat sellers, has decided to observe a dharna  at Azad Maidan. The Paryushan will be observed between August 27 and September 3 this year. Those participating in the dharna will have their mouths taped and hands tied. The BMC, at a general body meeting of the elected representatives on April 7, decided shut down all abattoirs during the nine-day Jain festival. According to the protestors, the worst hit will be the owners and the workers of the slaughterhouses. Dilip Patel, the BJP corporator who initiated the proposal to keep slaughterhouses closed during the nine-day period, said: “We have always respected and cared for the sentiments of the minorities and Jains are a minority. We have just passed a resolution as per Supreme Court order to close slaughterhouse during the period.”

3,000 TREES CUT AT PUNE ZOO: VINOD JAIN, ACTIVIST
PUNE: A city-based activist, Vinod Jain, has alleged that over 3,000 trees have been hacked at the Rajiv Gandhi zoological park at Katraj by Pune Municipal Corporation authorities over the past seven to eight months. In his complaint lodged at the Bharati Vidyapeeth police chowky, Jain has charged that while the department of social forestry had planted thousands of trees at the zoo premises around 20 years back, many of them have gone missing of late. Neither PMC's chief garden superintendent Yashwant Khaire, nor tree officer B. V. Jagtap were available for their comments despite repeated attempts made by TOI to contact them on their mobile phones.

Citing the rules of the Maharashtra Tree Act, Jain said that permission from the Tree Authority has to be obtained before the cutting or transplantation of any tree. An official docket is prepared and the Tree Authority takes a decision after hearing the objections, if any. The applicant is also required to pay a deposit of Rs 10,000 per tree that is to be cut. Jain charged that PMC undertook several development works such as construction of cages, boundary walls and pits for animals at the zoo over the past three to four years. But permission for cutting of trees was sought only in just two or three instances. In his complaint, Jain also wanted to know if the PMC had paid any deposit amount for cutting the trees. He appealed to the police to take cognisance of the cutting of trees and said that PMC should put numbers on all trees that it plans to cut.

Samanasuttam -is  brief compilation of the essential principles of Jaina’s religion and philosophy. In the book,  there are four parts and forty four sections in the book. There are 756 verses altogether. The book has been composed  with verses in Prakrit which can be sung and are fit for regular recitation. The Jaina Acharyas have called prakrit verses as sutras. The prakrit word sutta means sutra, sukta or also sruta. The word sutra is popular in the Jaina tradition. hence the book has been given the title of samanasuttam (sramanasuttam). The collection of the verses has been made ordinarily from the ancient texts. Hence this samanasutam is itself as valid as the scriptures. It can be said that the four parts or the 756 verses contain an all-sided and brief account of the Jaina religion, an exposition of its principles and ethical code of conduct. This is a representative book acceptable to all for the purpose of having a general acquaintance with the doctrines of the jaina religion, its code of ethics and the process of gradual spiritual advancement of life, in a tradition but devotional manner. Victory shall there be to the Jaina doctrine. The book is compiled by Sri Jinendra Varni and edited by Prof. Sagarmal Jain. The book can be obtained from the publishers, Bhagwan Mahavir Memorial Samiti, Bhagwan Mahavir Kendra, (near south campus, Delhi university), Benito Juarez Road, New Delhi-110021.

DEVLOK GAMAN
1. Three Jain Sadhwi Killed in Road Accident near Udapur
- Three Jain sadhwi, belonging to Shwetambar Sthanakwasi Shraman Sangh, Mahasati Shri Siddh Kunwar ji, alongwith Sadhwi Shri Vinay Prabha ji and sadhwi Divya Prabha Ji from amongst a group of eight sadhwi were hit by a fast-moving jeep on the Udaipur-Ahmedabad highway while moving on their Vihar towards Udaipur in the morning of 16th April to participate in the programmes on the Mahavir Jayanti day. Two other sadhwi (one of them was Sayyam Prabha Ji) were seriously injured and were rushed to a near-by hospital. They were later been reported to be out of danger. The other three sadhwi were saved as they were not hit. The bodies of three sadhwi, who had left for their heavenly abode, were brought to Bhilwara and kept for darshan by the devotees. They were later cremated on the 17th April there. The driver of the vehicle was later arrested. The entire Jain community has been heavily shocked by the sad news and condolence meetings were held at different places in Rajasthan and elsewhere to mourn the untimely death. The elderly sadhwi, Shri Siddh Kunwar Ji is the sister of Pravartini sadhwi Shri Yash Kunwar ji, from whom she had accepted diksha and who is having her stay at Shahpura, near Bhilwara. She was born in Begu village near Chittore and was just 64 years old.

2. Sadhwi Shri Svyam Prabha ji, Anuvrat anushasta and disciple of Acharya Shri Mahapragna, belonging to Shwetambar Terapanth sect left for her heavenly abode at Hissar in Haryana on the 11th February, 2008 after a short period of illness.
