Mr. Anshu Jain

Banker Germany

In the toffee-nosed echelons of corporate Europe, Anshu Jain, 39, is the solitary Indian, making waves as the head of Deutsche Bank's Global Markets division in what was radical change of guard for the bank. In the past seven years after joining, he has overseen Deutsche's transformation from a sleepy German commercial bank into an investment banking powerhouse that earns more than 80 per cent of its revenue outside Germany.. He is also currently one of seven global business heads for the bank, making him one of the most influential Indians in investment banking across the globe.

Jain did economics from Delhi University before doing an MBA from the University of Massachusetts. He joined Merrill Lynch in 19888 where he helped set up and run their global hedge fund coverage group before he turned 30. Jain's successes seemed to have impressed Deutsche's old bosses, who were looking for innovations in their stodgy style of functioning.

"India is actually swimming against the tide when we talk about banks being 'flush with cash'"
