Universal Forgiveness

1.1 Introduction to Pratikraman Ritual : This book consists of the Pratikraman ritual which includes many texts (Sutras). The original texts are written in Ardha maghdhi and Sanskrit languages which consist of many hymns in praise of Lords and many verses of repentance and confession.

"Prati" means "back" and "kraman" means "to go", i.e. to go back, review, confess, and repent the bad thoughts and deeds from our daily activities.

Jains are required to do Pratikraman twice a day, in the morning and in the evening. The evening Pratikraman is for the repentance of sins done during the day and the morning pratikraman is for the repentance of sins done during the night.

However, if someone cannot perform the daily Pratikraman there is a provision for biweekly, quarterly, or yearly Pratikraman. The yearly Pratikraman is called Samvatsari and the scriptures indicate that Samvatsari Pratikraman must be done by all Jains.

Six Essential Daily Activities for Common People : Jainism advocates six essential rites for common people to help them free themselves from negative thoughts and enhance their spiritual progress. It recommends these rites be performed daily.
1. Samayik - Equanimity : Remaining calm and undisturbed for 48 minutes
2. Chaturvimshati-stav : Praying and appreciating the qualities of the twenty four Tirthankars
3. Vandana : Respecting and saluting ascetics
4. Pratikraman : Reviewing your daily activities, and concentrating on retreating from them
5. Kayotsarg : Stopping attachments to the body, and turning within yourself
6. Pratyakhan/Pachchhakhan : Renouncing certain activities for some time to discipline one's self

Meaning of Samayik Rituals (Equanimity) : During the Samayik one should reflect on the following qualities :
· Equanimity towards all beings
· Self-control and pure aspirations
· Abandonment of every thought which is tainted by desire and aversion.

Equanimity is the quality of remaining calm and undisturbed. It implies evenness of mind and temper. It is serenity and composure. It is essential for the practice of nonviolence and removal of Karmas.

Equanimity is practiced by monks and nuns at all times. Common people can gradually detach themselves from all external objects.

Meaning of Pratikraman Ritual : As explained above "Prati" means "back" and "kraman" means "to go", i.e. to go back, review, confess, and repent the bad thoughts and deeds from our daily activities. It also means going back to the path of nonviolence, truthfulness, non attachment, forgiving the faults of others, asking forgiveness with an open heart, and extending friendship. This will stop (samvara) the influx (asrava) of karma that cover the true nature of our soul (self, jiva, or atman) which has the qualities of perfect knowledge, vision, bliss, and power.
Throughout the Pratikraman ritual, if you think about material happiness, family, friends, and relationships then you should remember that this is not the true nature of my soul, let me meditate on the mantra called;

"NA-HUM" (I am not that) : Next, reinforce your identification with your soul which has the qualities of perfect knowledge, vision, bliss, and power. Please meditate on the mantra;

"SO-HUM" (I am that) : The Pratikraman ritual is the single most important essential because it covers the other five essentials as follows:
· One is required to do Samayik before the Pratikraman ritual, which covers the Samayik essential.
· During Pratikraman rituals, one recites the Logass and Namutthunam sutras which salutes the twenty four Tirthankars and their qualities, which covers the Chaturvimshati-stav essential.
· During Pratikraman rituals, one recites the Khamasaman and Tikhutto sutras which salutes the ascetics and their qualities, which covers the Vandana essential.
· The Pratikraman ritual is done while sitting or standing in the meditating position, providing Kayotsarg to human body.
· During the Pratikraman ritual one takes Pachchha_khan according to one's capacity which covers Pratyakhan essential.

Preparation for Pratikraman and Samayik Ritual :
· Wear clean clothes
· Sit on a cotton piece of cloth on a hard floor
· keep a clean handkerchief in the front of your mouth during the recitation of rituals or keep your mouth covered all the time
· Refrain from eating, drinking, and chewing
· Avoid using the restroom during ritual
· Keep silent when Sutras are not recited by you

Pratikraman Ritual :
One should adopt the vows of Samayik before one begins the Pratikraman ritual. The complete Pratikraman ritual is done in three phases.

Adopting the vows of Samayik (phase 1)
Pratikraman Ritual (phase 2)
Concluding the vows of Samayik (phase 3)
Adopting the vows of Samayik
A person adopts the vows of equanimity for 48 minutes by reciting the following Sutras for 48 minutes:

Jain prayer : Namaskar/Namokar Maha-mantra (recite three times)

Namo Arihantanam
Namo Siddhanam
Namo Airiyanam
Namo Uvajjhayanam
Namo Loe Savva Sahunam

Eso Panch Namokaro
Savva Pava Panasano
Mangala Nancha Savvesim
Padhamam Havai Mangalam

Namo Arihantanam : I bow to those living beings who have reached enlightenment by overcoming inner weaknesses, who have attained infinite knowledge, vision, bliss, and power and showed us the path which brings an end to the cycle of birth and death.

Namo Siddhanam : I bow to those who have attained the state of perfection and immortality by liberating themselves of all karma.

Namo Airiyanam : I bow to those living beings who practice before preaching right knowledge, right perception, and right conduct.

Namo Uvajjhayanam : I bow to those living beings who understand the true nature of the soul and teach the importance of the spiritual life over the material life.

Namo Loe Savva Sahunam : I bow to all the living beings who strictly follow the five great vows of conduct and inspire us to live a simple life.

Eso Panch Namokaro : To these five types of great souls I offer my praise.

Savva Pava Panasano : Such praise will help diminish my negative vibrations and sins.

Mangala Nancha Savvesim : Giving this praise is most auspicious.

Padhamam Havai Mangalam : It is so auspicious as to bring happiness.

These four are auspicious; the arihantas, the siddhas, the ascetics, and the religion expounded by the omniscient beings (Tirthankars).

These four are the most divine in the universe; the arihantas, the siddhas, the ascetics, and the religion expounded by the omniscient beings (Tirthankars).

May I take refuge in these four; the arihantas, the siddhas, the ascetics, and the religion expounded by the omniscient beings (Tirthankars).

With the two-fold activities, (I will not do and I will not make others do) and with three-fold activities of mind, speech, and body, I will not overlook any desirable activities.
Oh respected Lord! I give up all harmful activities of speech and body.

I criticize myself for my undesirable actions. I express disapproval of my demerits. I am determined to free myself (soul).

While walking I may have pained living beings, I may have crushed living beings, I may have crushed live animate seeds, I may have crushed live plants, living beings in the dew, ant hills, the living moss, living beings in water particles, the live earth, the webs of spiders, I may have harassed or may have crushed all these.

Whatever living beings may have been caused pain or torment by me :

souls with only one sense, the sense of touch, as in the elements of earth, water, fire, air, and in plants;
souls with only two senses, the sense of touch and taste, as in worms and shell creatures;
souls with three senses, the sense of touch, taste, and smell, as in ants;
souls with four senses, the sense of touch, taste, smell, and seeing, as in bees, wasps, and other flying insects;
souls with all five senses, the sense of touch, taste, smell, seeing and hearing, as in beings of the water (fish), beings of the land (mammals, animals and human), and beings of the sky (birds).

Whomever may have been beaten or struck by me while traveling;
whomever may have gotten covered by dust;
whomever may have been rubbed up against;
who may have been forced to collide with one another;
whomever may have been caused pain by my touching or tilting them; whomever may have been tormented by being turned entirely upside down; To whomever I may have inflicted pain;
whomever I may have frightened;
whomever I may have shifted from one place to another;
whomever I may have separated from life and made lifeless.

May all that be forgiven and may all the suffering I caused, knowingly or unknowingly, cease. May the ignorance in me which caused pain in other beings lives come to an end, and may they all forgive me.

Concluding The Vows of Samayik

In the last phase a person concludes the vow of equanimity (Samayik) by reciting the following Sutras.

Jain Prayer to Great Souls :

Namo Siddhanam
Namo Airiyanam
Namo Uvajjhayanam
Namo Loe Savva Sahunam

Concluding the Vows of Samayik :
Samayik-vaya-jutto Sutra:

E Char Mese Sangya Koi Sangya Hoi To
Tassa Miccha Mi Dukkadam.
Samayik
Bhavse Liya Bhavse Pala
Usame Koyi Dosha Hua Ho To
Tassa Miccha Mi Dukkadam.

With regard to the vow of Samayik, there are five actions which are known and should be avoided.

They are described just as they are :
Mistaken or faulty thoughts, speech, bodily activity, forgetfulness of the vow of Samayik, and the improper procedure of Samayik.

If I have committed any of these faults, I beg forgiveness for them.
During the period of Samayik, if my bodily activities such as touch, and behavior were improper, if I did not offer complete and proper praise, respect, and worship, and, if I did not observe the teachings of the omniscient, then I may be forgiven for these faults.

There are other faults of mind, speech, and body which one may commit in Samayik. Whatever faults I may have committed, I beg forgiveness for them.
The instinct of eating, the instinct of fear, the instinct of pleasure, and the instinct of possessiveness should be avoided during Samayik. Out of these four instincts, if I had any instincts, may I be forgiven for it.
I took the vow of Samayik in a proper manner and I completed it as prescribed. Nevertheless, if any impropriety was done, I beg forgiveness for it.

As mentioned above, there are numerous faults of mind, speech, and body which should be avoided in Samayik. Some of these are doing Samayik because of pride, for fame and prestige, out of greed, for wealth, or with a desire of material reward.

After the completion of the Samayik and Pratikraman rituals, a person may recite some stavans or bhajans :

Samaro Mantra : This song shows the importance of the Namokar Mantra, which should be remembered in periods of our happiness as well as unhappiness.

Samaro Mantra Bhalo Navkar,
Ye Chhe Chaud Purav No Saar.
Ye Na Mahima No Nahi Paar,
Ye No Arth Anant Apaar.
Sukh Maa Samaro, Dukh Ma Samaro,

The Universal Friendship Song :
Maitri Bhavana
Maitri Bhavanu Pavitra Zaranu,
Muj Haiya Ma Vahya Kare,
Shubh Thao Aa Sakal Vishvanu,
Evi Bhavana Nitya Rahe.
Gunathi Bharela Gunijana Dekhi,
Haivu Maru Nrutya Kare,
A Santo Na Charan Kamal Ma,
Muj Jivan No Ardhavya Rahe.

Oin Krur Ne Dharma Vihona,
Dekhi Dilma Dard Rahe,
Karuna Bhini Ankho Mathi,
Ashruno Shubh Shrot Vahe.
Marg Bhulela Jivan Pathik Ne,
Marg Chindhava Ubho Rahu,
Kare Upexa A Marag Ni,
To Ye Samata Chitt Dharu.
Chitrabhanuni Dharma Bhavana,
Haiye Sau Manav Lave,
Ver Zer Na Paap Taji Ne,
Mangal Geeto Sau Gave.

May the sacred stream of amity
flow forever in my heart.
May the universe prosper,
such is my cherished desire.
May my heart sing with ecstasy
at the sight of the virtuous.
May my life be
an offering at their feet.
May my heart bleed at the sight of
the wretched, the cruel, the irreligious.
May tears of compassion
flow from my eyes.
May I always be there to show the path
to the pathless wanderers of life.
Yet if they should not hearken to me,
may I bide in patience.
May the spirit of goodwill
enter all our hearts.
May we all sing in chorus
the immortal song of human concord.

Appendix :
Significance of a Rosary (Mala) :
A rosary consists of 108 beads representing 108 qualities of praiseworthy Souls:
Arihants 12 qualities
Siddhas 8 qualities
Acharyas 36 qualities
Upadhyaya 25 qualities
Sadhus 27 qualities

Total 108 qualities
Proper use of a Handkerchief or Muhpatti

Some Jains use a handkerchief around their mouth during Samayik and pratikraman in order not to kill invisible bacteria in the air.

Others hold the handkerchief in the front of their mouth while reciting Sutras during Samayik or Pratikraman.
The four corner of the handkerchief represent right knowledge, right perception, right conduct, and self control.
After folding it several times, one holds the handerchief in the right hand and touches the left arm with handkerchief from fingers to shoulder indicating acceptance of good qualities such as truth, helping others, less attachment, consideration, politeness, etc.
Then the folded handkerchief is swapped in the left hand and one touches the other arm from shoulder to fingers indicating rejection of bad qualities such as anger, greed, jealousy, stealing, violence, ego, etc.

Universal Forgiveness :
After performing Samvatsari Pratikraman or Daslakshna, Jains request forgiveness from all living beings in person or via mail. One example of such request in writing is shown below:

Kshma Veerasya Bhushanam

On This Auspicious Occasion of

Kshamavani

We Beg Forgiveness For Our Intentional and Unintentional Wrongdoing
