Changing Leshya (Colours) : Changing Feelings

Expectation and the tendency towards violence associated with it are an important aspect of human personality. Those who go to a tree for fruit have six different thoughts about it:

The First, the deeply contented one, says to himself, "The fruit on the ground is enough for me; why should I needlessly trouble the tree?" And he gets busy gathering the fallen fruit.

The second one says to himself, "When the tree is laden so richly with fruit, why should I make do only with the fruit on the ground? I must pluck at least some fresh fruit," and he begins to do it.

The third man says to himself, " How long will I pluck the fruit one by one like the other man? Why shouldn't I pluck a bunch of fruit?" And his hand reaches out to bunches of fruit.

The fourth man says to himself, "To get the desired fruit, it is not enough to pluck it by the bunch. It is possible only when I cut branches." And he gets busy doing so.

The fifth one wonders, "How long will I keep cutting these numerous branches? why should I not cut a big section of the tree?" And soon a whole section falls to his axe.

In the case of the sixth man the thought comes in his mind, "Why not fell the entire tree and be the sole master of all the fruit?"

If we consider the cases from the last to the first, a whole pattern of thinking emerges before us. In the terminology of Jainism, this is called leshya. Leshya are of six kinds:

1. black leshya
2. blue leshya
3. light brown leshya
4. yellow leshya
5. pink leshya
6. white leshya

Human personality is determined according to leshya. Different types of individuals are explained psychologically in the leshya phraseology in Jain philosophy. A man living under the influence of krishna (black), neel (blue), and kapot (light brown) leshya lives a negative life, whereas a man characterized by tejo (yellow), padma (pink), and shukla (white) leshya leads a positive life. The thoughts of the mind play an important role in determining good and bad actions, their transformation and their outcome.

In the mirror of leshya one can see one's reflection. Practicing spirituality transforms the inauspicious leshya and links them to the auspicious leshya. Faith, resolution and consistency are bound to change human personality.

A change in leshya brings about a corresponding change in thinking. The entire personality undergoes a change. All that is needed is a deep conviction that it is possible to bring about an inner transformation.
