Jain Scholar Bhagchandra Jain received his D.Litt. in Sanskrit, Pali-Prakrit and Hindi and his Ph.D. thesis was on "Jainism in Buddhist Literature" awarded by the Vidyoday University of Ceylon under Commonwealth Fellowship in l965. A former Professor and Head of the Department of Pali and Prakrit, Nagpur University, Professor and Director of Jainology, Rajasthan University, Jaipur and Parshvanath Vidyapeeth, Varanasi, he is presently Hony. Professor and Director of Sarvoday Vidyapeeth, Sagar and Sanmati Research Institute of Indology, Nagpur. He has written extensively on Jainism and Buddhism and Sanskrit, Pali Prakrit, Marathi and Hindi languages and literatures. Following are some of the Awards he has received: UGC Research Fellowship, Commonwealth Fellowship, UGC National Fellowship, Mahavir award, Central Government of India Award, Rampuriya award, Kundakunda Jnanapeeth award, Jain Seva evam Sanskriti award, Shruta Samvardhan award etc. He has travelled abroad several times attending conferences, delivering lectures in the Universities/ academic centers and representing Jainism and Buddhism in the Assembly of Worlds Religions. Dr.Jain has got published about 40 books on Jainism and Buddhism. Some of the important books are as follows: l. Jainism in Buddhist Literature. The Jain Sanskriti Kosh is really a scholarly survey of Jain religion and culture around the world upto the twentieth century. It describes not only official teachings but also popular practices, sources and their interpretations, tradition, history, modern developments, festivals and devotions. lt can be called as an Encyclopaedia of Jainism in Hindi language. ------------------------------------------------ |
